Creepy Creature

Updated: Oct 29, 2020

CONCEPT SKETCHES AND PLANNING

I quickly sketched some possible creatures I was interested in. Taking inspiration from existing media like Lord of the Rings as well as my general interest in mythology. I had a really clear vision for a "banshee" however. So, this was the idea I ultimately decided on going with.

I re-sketched some ideas for my Banshee. I focused a lot on the head since this would be the most intense part of the model. I knew she would be humanoid-like. Because banshees are death omens, I wanted her to have a skeletal appearance. For her ears, I wanted them to be pointy, elf-like. I played with different ideas for the eyes, and decided instead of pupils I wanted them to resemble heart lines on a heart monitor. I then quickly sketched the position I envisioned.

I based the crouching position off of Gollum. Additionally, I knew she was going to wear a tattered sort of garment, and that for coloring I wanted it to have a more black and white palette. For that I took inspiration from Loish's Nocturne.

HEAD SCULPTING

I started with the basic head shape.

Phase One

I then sculpted the more prominent features like the cheek bones, eye sockets, and the nose. I based those shapes off of different references as well as my alignment. I kind of eyeballed it, didn't really trace, but my creature was going to be more cartoon-ish in nature so perfect proportions was never the goal.

Next, was the ears. I added a separate mesh for these and modeled them off of elf ears. I also added eyeballs. I then added some more details to the face and the nose, giving it more bone structure within.

Phase Three

I then added a simple outline for a mouth as well as an eyelid. For flavor I also added eyelashes.

For now, I was done with the head.

The body began as a simple outline of shapes. I then went in and boolean unioned parts to the chest. I then went in an individually sculpted each part. It took a while, but I'm ultimately very happy with how it turned out. It was a combination of the snake hook, draw, smooth, and occasionally other brushes. I'm really proud of the hands and arms. My legs got a little weird, but overall I'm happy with the results.

Phase Four

Phase Five

It was now time to paint. It was more difficult than I anticipated as the blend brush doesn't do it as seamlessly as I would have wanted.

I added the armatures which screwed the shape and then modeled a dress for my banshee. I was going to go the cube route with a series of loop cuts, but decided to instead to sculpt out of a sphere. I made the bottoms jagged, added some holes, and then painted parts gray to give it an old, dirty feel.

Phase Six

I then added hair. This was being a really big pain, and my file was super laggy due to all the detail. It's something I'm going to need to work more on, but I got it kind of decent.

For my background, I recycled trees from my last project and made a glow lake to add lighting. I knew I wanted a dark environment.
