Project 2: Infographic Brief and Story Board

Updated: Dec 20, 2019

BRIEF:

After researching both Disney World and Helium (which I know), I've decided to gear my product towards Helium. Which is a shocker to me too. The issue with my Disney World information was there was no good way to connect all the info to be somewhat narrative. Whereas the Helium research did.

Normally, I hate anything chemistry related, but I actually found Helium to be interesting. I hope others do to, if not, then it'll just be a minute. The thing that I like about Helium is that is almost has this natural "life-cycle" to it. It was one of the original elements in the universe, the thing that led to everything that we know being here. It's something that a lot of us on earth depend on in our everyday lives, but it's kind of proven to be this afterthought. It's extremely rare on earth, and it's a byproduct of elements found here, but it takes thousands of years to produce. The other thing is that it's almost impossible to store. It's light enough that leaks out of things and will find its way to space. So, the fact that it's so hard to produce, that we only have 14 reserves where it can be found, but that's it a vital part of everything from medicine to the internet, it's something that I think that we should be more aware of. It's a nonrenewable resource that we don't consider when making things. A lot of helium is used wastefully. We've entered a shortage of it. I feel like it's the same for paper. So much paper is made and consumed, but even though we know of the consequences, we do it anyway.

From an engineering perspective, it's one of those things where I think we do have to consider the materials used in what we make. Due to the state of the environment and the world around us, it's irresponsible not to. Impact is another branch for consideration when doing design. How and why we use something as well as if there are alternatives is a part of that ideation process, and I don't think a lot of people consider it unless they are specifically taught to.

As far as the look of my video, I do want bright colors and simple shapes. Luckily when you are dealing with something as small as an atom of helium, there is a lot of visual freedom. I do plan on having a couple of graphs just to show quantities and usage. I also plan on giving my project a 3D element by including a space element. I want to start at the beginning of the story for Helium. This includes a Big Bang. There are a lot of pieces that I think have very simple visual representations, but also have some fun more complex movements. Even if the topic itself seems not as interesting, I think it has the potential to be visually so.
