Link to Prototype
So, I started this process by messily sketching and organizing where things would go. I really didn't want to change the concept of my original too much, but I did want to enhance it. I ended up with four distinct sections: a student profile, planner, messages, and campus news/announcements section.
I knew I was going to do dark mode because it's superior, and looked at various apps I have to see how they did things and replicated that so it wasn't always a verbatim-do-what-Apple-does.
One of the reasons I think the iOS14 was so exciting or appealing for people was that it offered people a chance to individualize their interfaces to reflect them more. I wanted to kind of mimic that. So, I chose a new color palette that replicated fall tones, and added a couple photo-widget things that were probably customized. The colors are not typical of Apple, but we can imagine maybe a user picked them. I took some inspiration from screens that people made with the newer update.
I also included personal events on the calendar and not just school ones. If I were to look at a schedule, I'd want it all in relatively one place.
Based on the feedback a lot of people were getting about what information was the most important or if people needed a campus-wide alert several times, I thought that a Modal screen was a perfect way to approach it. It's important so you want people to see it, it gives them the option to learn more, but ultimately they can see what they need to know and dismiss it.
For the planner, I imagine someone could tap on it and it would bring people to a more detailed view. I also stuck to the known for messages.
I imagined things like event announcements as well as school news could all be put under its own tab. Especially with the state of the world, there is no guarantee that a user would even be in the same place as their university. I didn't focus on CU but rather my host University when I studied abroad. This was just to shake things up a little. They don't really have a traditional dining hall though so I opted for a lunch special instead of a menu.
