discovering the rhino

picture of clouds for #aesthetic

I was in Form for a week last semester so I was able to play around a little with Rhino, but it would be bold of you to assume that I remembered anything. In fact, I really only remembered making objects that could be preselected (spheres, pyramids, cubes, etc.). So, a chance discover (and rediscover) was still super helpful.

Here are some fun things I found:

-Explode: this function breaks objects into smaller bits, and separates lines from the whole, so you can move something without moving everything that it was once a part of.

-Command is really nice for when you know what you're looking for. It wasn't my prefered method for discovering things though just because it's a lot of guesswork.

-Dropdown menus: These were really nice. The different tabs helped me to infer what the different functions would do and what part of building and making a form they deal with. It also helped me realize just what exactly I could do with this program.

-Grid Snap: If I wanted to be more precise about placement this would help me pick a specific point on a grid to place to build.

-When building shapes you can pick different places to start and build out from (ex. diagonal, center, etc.)

-The settings for the viewports is in the bottom right corner. There are different icons that take you to different things. One of these is a layers tab (I believe...I didn't really mess with it but it looked like the ones in photoshop).

-Sometimes I would begin to draw an object only to realize that I was drawing in 2D and not 3D. Perspective was really nice for that.

-Zooming and moving around is a little hard on this application. I didn't feel like I was completely in control of viewing in the viewports.

Overall, I'm really excited to learn this semester!
