Lab 3: Papercuts and Tape

Updated: Aug 30, 2019

For this lab we were to unravel one object and put it together and 3D print three other objects.

MODELING:

Item One: A flower

I actually began this by modeling grapes. This was difficult as I wanted them to be realistic but it was hard to get the spheres to join together. However, the repeating patterns of it were nice to me and instead I decided to make a flower. I actually began by making one petal. It was a teardrop shade extruded slightly and then cage-edited and bended to add realism. I then copied it through the rotate function. I then scaled it slightly, made slight alterations through cage-edit and stacked it. I repeated this whole process but with a different shaped petal and less of them in the rotation. Where it went wrong though is when I turned it into a mesh. No matter how many polygons with looked strange and I think this was due to the fact that I wanted them to realistic so the bends in each petal made it look strange as a mesh. I went back and tried to delete the center and alter it so it would be flatter but this still didn't give me the desired effect with the mesh. I am however satisfied with the model I printed.

ITEM TWO: Cacti

This item was actually fairly simplistic and was originally going to be the object I was going to unfold then it became the backup plan since I really really wanted to unfold a bird. I began with a star shape then made it so it had 32 sides so it was more circular. Then I extruded it. I repeated this for each of the "stems" (I do not know cactus anatomy lol) and bended them. From there I bended them and boolean unioned them. I used cage edit for each of the tops since they were flat. I actually really liked how this turned out as a mesh. I think it definitely would have been easier to unfold and make than my bird object.

ITEM THREE: A swallow

PRINTING:

For this part of the lab I only printed two objects that I modeled for the unravel. One of which was the one I chose to unravel. The other object was the real life item that I made for Lab 1 since I've been wanting to print it since I made it.

UNFOLDING

For the unfold I decided to split the bird into different parts then scale them. I unfolded 4 different parts total: two wings, a tail, and a body.
