Lab One: The Year of the Pig

This lab really helped me learn how I could use Rhino. When I first started using it I was really overwhelmed. There was so much to do that I didn't really know where to begin with learning how to use the program.

Part A:

This part was a really good place to start because it showed me how to create a shape.

The shape I made kind of reminds thistles.

cutting this was the worst but I'm happy with how it looks.

Part B:

This was the part I was really worried about. I know that working with surfaces can be a little tricky and that they might not always do what I wanted them to do. This is still true after this exercise, but I definitely feel more comfortable with them. When creating curves, I had an idea for what something would look like, but then Rhino would have very different thoughts. I had the most fun with revolve and ended up using that a lot for part E.

Part C:

The thing that surprised me the most with this part is that there are so many ways to make a solid. The tools that I think were the most helpful were the Boolean tools. They were also the ones I enjoyed using the most. I also really liked Cage Edit which I thought was a really nice way to edit surfaces and solids. The ones I struggled with were FilletSrf and ChamferSrf. The video tutorials on Rhino helped a lot with this aspect of it. I

Part D:

I was so nervous about 3D printing an object. I just felt like I would mess it up or something, but it actually was really cool to see something digital and make it into a 3D form like that. I made a an evil cat looking thing for mine. This is where I found layers to be really helpful. For the previous parts it was a tedious thing I didn't like using them for that and eventually stopped using them all together. For these it was very helpful to make each separate object.

all of my possible objects

Here is the objects I used and me and the printer:

Part E: The part for which this post is named.

For this, I decided to do my piggy bank. Here are the photos I used and worked off of:

To make it:

-I used interpolate points to make curves that resembled the pig's shape.

-I used revolve for the main body. While it could have been done probably by just making a sphere and editing it, it was actually really nice using revolve because I was able to get that nose shape.

-For the ears, tail, and legs I made seperate objects and then joined them into the main object.

-For the Feet and the ears I used mirror and copy to place the same objects on the pig and then Cage edit to smooth out bends and bend in the ears slightly.

-For the top and bottom I used BooleanDifference to make impressions in the objects, I also did this for subtle indents for the nose.
